The McCartney concert is a no-brainer. Filmed using more than 25 Hi-Def cameras and powered by a thunderous 5.1 digital surround, it's probably the next best thing to a front-row seat at the 2005 concert. Paul McCartney: The Space Between Us is a natural pairing with The Universe, because the popular live tour included a performance that was beamed to astronauts aboard the International Space Station, who woke to "English Tea." The tour featured live performances of 30 hits, among them "Magical Mystery Tour," "Flaming Pie," "Maybe I'm Amazed," "Eleanor Rigby," "Let Me Roll It," "Drive My Car," "Got to Get You into My Life," "Till There Was You," "I Will," "Fine Line," "Good Day Sunshine," "Fixing a Hole," "Hey Jude," "Too Many People," "Penny Lane," "English Tea," "I've Got a Feeling," "Follow Me," "Jenny Wren," "Helter Skelter," "Yesterday," and "Get Back."
Announced extras: Interactive Jukebox, Sound Check Songs ("Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," "Friends to Go," "How Kind of You"), a U.S. Tour pre-show film "On the Road with US," a liner notes intro by Cameron Crowe, and "More about US" (extensive interviews with McCartney, the Band, and his U.S. Tour crew. Run time is 115 minutes, plus extras, with a suggested retail price of $34.95.
A&E's other foray into Blu-ray is The Universe--not to be confused with that Beatles-inspired musical, "Across the Universe." This is the popular 2007 TV show, which DVDTOWN's Christopher Long described as "one of the better series on the History Channel" and a show which "strikes a balance between entertainment and education." As Earth grapples with the effects of global warming, science has increasingly looked to outer space for answers. Are there other planets in the Universe with the unique ability to sustain life, or is there truly no place like home?
The Universe: The Complete Season One explores outer space through the visions, studies, and predictions of scientists and explorers, utilizing cutting-edge computer graphics and stunning footage to bring the Universe down to Earth. On November 18, all 13 visually-stunning episodes from Season One will be available on Blu-ray. Included on the three-disc set is the feature-length documentary, "Beyond the Big Bang." Total run time is 11 hours and 45 minutes, not counting the bonus features. Suggested retail price: $79.95.
